In a society where wealth is the only path to power, celebrities began selling the rights to their names to be used inconjunction with mainstream products. Endorsing a product simply by being in a commercial was not enough. All levels of celebrity including A-listers participated leaving Americans no choice but to accept it.

About the photo:
After the Alien Invasion War of 2011 and the destruction of the infamous "HOLLYWOOD" sign in California, the Veyeacom Corporation (whose financial support saved us from the alien attack) inherited the rights to rebuild the sign. The above photo was taken on the day of its uncovering. The sign was an obvious effort to make "selling-out" more acceptable to Americans.
